Rosalind kieran
Clinical Research Fellow. Funded by The Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust
Having a broad range of interests across the scientific disciplines, Rosalind chose to study Natural Sciences as an undergraduate at Newnham College, Cambridge and completed her Part II in Ecology and Human Impact on the Environment. She followed this up with a MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial College, London, where she focused on Ecological management. She carried out her dissertation in the Western Ghats in India, where she investigated the effect of farming practices on biodiversity. However, after much soul-searching she realised she was drawn towards the Medical Sciences and caring for people and decided to embark on a medical degree, which she carried out at King’s College London as a mature student. She carried out Foundation and Core Medical Training rotations across the East of England, obtaining her Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2018. After completing Core Medical Training in Oncology at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre she completed a year as a Robert’s Fellow at Guy’s Hospital specialising in urological malignancies. In 2019, she returned to Cambridge to carry out her Specialty Training in Medical Oncology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, obtaining her Specialty Certificate Examination in Medical Oncology in 2021. She is currently the East of England ambassador for the ESMO-ACP young Oncologists.
Rosalind developed an interest in mesothelioma during her thoracic rotation at Papworth Hospital, which is a regional centre for mesothelioma. She was keen to carry out research into this deadly treatment-resistant disease, which led her to being introduced to Daniel Munoz-Espin’s lab and his work on the role of cellular senescence in thoracic malignancies. Having been awarded with the Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust Clinical Research fellowship, she joined Daniel’s lab and aims to investigate cellular senescence in 2D cell lines, 3D organoids and mice models of mesothelioma. Rosalind hopes to use this fellowship as a launchpad to embark on a PhD to further explore targeting of cellular senescence as a potentially novel treatment option for mesothelioma.
Outside of medicine, Rosalind is a very keen long-distance runner and along with yoga this has helped her unwind from her busy work as a doctor. If she can keep the injuries at bay (!), she hopes to run her 5th marathon.
